I never understood the real utility of DVR until I actually got one. Now, I have two. I figured that VCRs do the same thing. In a way, it’s true, they do much the same thing. But DVR is about a thousand times more convenient than a VCR, especially when it come to watching college football.
First, you never have to worry about finding a blank tape, and you never have to worry about someone using the tape you have the game on and taping it over by accident before you get to watch it.
Next, after setting the timer on your VCR and leaving the house for the day, you don’t have to worry about a mini power outage resetting the time and date on your VCR before the game. DVR automatically remembers all settings and gets the time from the cable company. Thus while a power outage during the game will still mess you up, one before the game won’t.
Another great thing is that you can tape a game without monopolizing the television. It can still be used to watch other programs. Thus if you are at the OSU game and you want to tape the Michigan game for later viewing, your wife can still watch the Oxygen channel while you do so. You can even tape two games at once, which is often important in these days of overlapping programs, though this will monopolize the tv (though you could still watch a program already on the DVR hard drive while it tapes two games at the same time).
Watching the game on DVR also allows you to watch a game in the evening after everyone else has gone to bed, and you can race through the commercial breaks, thus compressing the time it takes to watch a game (though this is no different than a VCR).
But the best thing about DVR is when you are watching a game live and your wife yells down from upstairs that you need to go out and get some milk. In the past, this would cause an argument which would go something like this:
“Honey, the game is on.”
“Is that game more important than this family?”
Now, with DVR, you can just put the game on pause, run to the store, and when you get back, pick up the game where you left off. The best thing though is that you are now 15 minutes behind live tv, and when the commericals come on, you can zip through them until you catch up.

Two turnovers at home and Penn State only scores 17 points? And then they say “We’re back!”?
It will take more than a video of a game from 2005 to beat OSU this year. Though, after we beat Penn State, you can still watch your video and imagine what might have been, if it makes you feel better.
