The Columbus Dispatch today reported that Defensive End Lawrence Wilson will likely not be back until the bowl season.  Wilson broke the tibia in his leg.   There are two bones in the leg between the knee and the ankle.  The tibia is the main bone which runs down the center.  It is a thicker, weight bearing bone.  The fibula is a thinner bone that runs along the outside of the lower leg and into the anke, and provides stabilization to the leg.

I’m no doctor, but I think that fractures of this sort are becoming more common with the advent of players wearing improvied ankle braces.  The braces keep the ankle from bending too far due to the force of a bad twist.  But that force still has to go some where, and my theory is that it travels up the ankle and snaps either the tibia or the fibula.

Wilson has not committed to any predictions for his return to football.  He did say that he is working out on a treadmill and doing exercise in water.  I’m sure he has the best rehab people out there working with him.  Whether he is ready or not, the NCAA rules on taking a medical redshirt may play some part in the timing of his return.

As for Chris Wells, RB coach Dick Tressel squashed concerns that Wells has a chronic left ankle problem.  He said that Wells rolled it during an earlier play, and then when he was tackled, one of the tacklers “cranked” on it (meaning the fellow twisted it violently) and this caused Wells to come off after the play.

It’s sad to hear about players doing this kind of thing at the bottom of the pile, but unfortunately, I have seen OSU players do this (Robert Reynolds, anyone?), though not during this season.
