Last night after the game, I found myself walking through the Short North on High Street to meet some friends at the Mojo lounge. It was particularly uncrowded at this time of night as I only remarked a guy walking slightly ahead of me. From the other side of the street, I was suddenly greeted with a rather loud, obnoxious and drunken, “O – H – ?!”
A silence followed. Neither I nor the man in front of me considered even turning towards the paroxysm. As I walked a few more steps, I pondered the inclination of our rather exuberant reveler. I quickly determined that he typified almost all Ohio State fans: unmitigated arrogance fueled by the assumption that all in Ohio care about the Buckeyes as well as the thought that we are all defined by Ohio State football. Such an attitude may forever stunt Columbus in an adolescent state. Is that really all it has to offer? OSU fans would have you believe so. The alcohol laden breath flowing from the anonymous Buckeye’s exhortation was quickly falling to the ground.
Later on my trek, I heard other inebriated Buckeye fans trying to perform their national championship calculus. “Oklahoma is losing. That means if this, that and the other team lose as well, we are in the national championship.” How quickly the Buckeye faithful forget a loss to an unranked Illinois team as well as the debacle against Florida. Let me make that equation a little simpler to follow. The memory of the Florida implosion hasn’t left the minds of those with a vote in any poll. The loss to Illinois gives those voters the perfect excuse to prevent another Ohio State disaster. Unless just about every team in front of OSU loses, those voters will use that excuse to do just that – relegate OSU to a meaningless game.
Of course another national championship chance may also result in another quickly forgotten lesson – be careful what you wish for.
What about our anonymous Buckeye’s team unity cry from afar? His “O – H -” no longer rang in the air. The guy in front of me continued on undisturbed. As did I until I could no longer resist.
I turned, cupped my hands to my mouth and returned, “U – I.”
He’s probably still trying to figure out what the spells.

Two turnovers at home and Penn State only scores 17 points? And then they say “We’re back!”?
It will take more than a video of a game from 2005 to beat OSU this year. Though, after we beat Penn State, you can still watch your video and imagine what might have been, if it makes you feel better.
